WHAT IS CARDIAC CALCIUM SCAN?
Coronary artery disease begins with the buildup of plaque (consisting of cholesterol, debris and clots) in the arteries. Calcium is also deposited in these plaques. Calcium deposits in the cardiac coronary arteries narrow them increasing the risk of heart attacks. Doctors use cardiac calcium scans to look for these calcium deposits. The result of this test is often called cardiac calcium score. Cardiac calcium scan is an early detector of these deposits.
